about the work
Ceramics from Arrow + Sage are handbuilt, achieving forms that are more organic in shape than those thrown on a potter’s wheel. Each piece is created by hand, utilizing high quality clays and glazes. No two pieces are exactly alike. Each is unique, bringing the coveted artistry of handmade to the home.
behind the name | a note from the artist
I grew up in rural Hillsborough, North Carolina. My dad built our log cabin home on acres of land when he and my mom first got married. To this day that house is surrounded by beautiful ground. Wooded and full of gardens. Azaleas line the gravel drive. Zinnias, crocosmia, and sage spill from the edges of a charming chicken coop and greenhouse. Jasmine crawls the fencing surrounding a serene water garden full of irises and maiden hair ferns. Vegetable gardens offer tomato bounties in summer and baskets of sugar snaps in spring.
My home growing up was full of earth, of art, and of truth. My parents, both Christ followers, fostered an environment that encouraged my relationship with Jesus, my creativity, and my art. My roots were planted deep. In faith, in life, in soil.
As an adult, art started with the garden. I guess the soil beneath our feet has always been part of who I am. As I planted and cultivated flowers and herbs – at first, in just a few tiny pots – I began to see the hand of our Creator and God unfold. The work of The Artist. Each spring a new beginning. Each morning new blooms opening, showcasing brilliant colors as He showed off the work of His hands. Each plant so unique and different. How vast He is. Infinitely creative. Immeasurably great.
I grew. My art grew. Soil, dirt. Clay. Making things with my hands. Taking something shapeless and turning it into something beautiful, useful, pleasing.
Arrow + Sage was born.
Arrow – a shaft sharpened at the front and with feathers or vanes at the back, shot from a bow as a weapon or for sport.
My dad is the epitome of gentle, quiet strength. He is physically strong, fit, and brave. Yet he is gentle. Loving. Quiet. A writer. An expert archer. The arrow.
Sage – an aromatic plant with grayish-green leaves that are used as a culinary herb, native to southern Europe and the Mediterranean.
My mom is an artist. Painter, potter, teacher, gardener. There’s no doubt in my mind that I got my creative spark from her. She is strong yet soft. Brave. Wise. She is much of why I fell in love with the garden, and reconnected with my artist roots. The sage.
Psalm 127:4 “Like arrows in the hand of a warrior, so are the children of ones youth.”
Arrow + Sage is a name, a voice, a place for me to gather my art and create. It embodies being rooted deeply in what’s most important, and living an artful life. It’s about who I am, where I come from, and where I am going.
Isaiah 64:8 “Yet you, LORD, are our Father. We are the clay, you are the potter; we are all the work of your hand.”
